Scatter, disperse and imagine
something in the midst of split fragment, Soyeon Ahn, 2019

[Hyungkoo Lee: PENETRALE] P21

Soyeon Ahn / Art Critic

One seems to revolve omnidirectionally centering on coordinates of countlessly intersecting horizontal and vertical lines, while the other leads the viewer to enter or perhaps exit from outside in and vice versa. These two must play a large role in how the “certain body” which is to enter the respective spaces perceives each space, or how the body physically senses the “matter” that occupies space. This leads the possibility of perception that occurs when the series of body as a structure comes into contact with unidentifiable matter. Here, they attempt at the occupation of space, as if to encourage the possibility of various imaginations that lie dormant to emerge. This is one of the many old ways through which Hyungkoo Lee continues to imagine form as matter through his body in this world. Lee would take a recognizable form, shift it into a material dimension, then construct it into a new form in that matter, thereby ultimately actualizing in front of our eyes the presence of a non-real existence through such process of “becoming” something. Each taking up its own exhibition space, X (2019) and Psyche up panorama (2019) lie in extension of such process. In particular, the experience of the sensing body is emphasized even more than ever before, in order to re-approach the riddle-like implications of their forms in the two abstract structures that have doubled. For instance, the two works share a very similar interest with Kiamkoysek (2018) in terms of chronological flow, but because this time the (abstract) matter is more accentuated than (concrete) form, the connection to the experience of the body is delayed. However, if all goes as expected, the certain (infinite) accomplishments of the body’s experiences in the two spaces should be able to overcome such difficulty and ultimately bring forth random entities in the structures that occupy the space.

X demonstrates that the scattered bits of forms that have been dispersed in empty space as if to have deviated from gravity are united by yet another force. It appears that such force is not something generated by an indicator that props up form (gravity), but force that’s emitted from within the forms themselves. If the framework of form can expand according to the circumstances and become a three-dimensional index, a point where various axis of coordinates come together must lie somewhere. But that’s not all that easy to find. This is because the fragmented pieces of form become aware of their unstable status (holding failure and misconception as collateral) due to the fragments that lie in close proximity on the index, rather than being solidly constructed based on a single point. Also, in a way, it’s clear that this form, which seems to have stopped at an incomplete state a long time ago already, is not something that once existed then vanished, but rather captures the prediction about a future that has never been completed even once. Here, the bigger implication is not ‘what this incomplete form is’, but ‘what this non-complete form might become’. The predictable form is not something that was ‘suggested’ as a definite outline based on its similarity with something else since the beginning, but closer to being “proposed” to renew its form through a certain body that is located in a particular time and space of incompleteness. In other words, in a space where various material forms are laid out, the “certain body” (commonly defined as the audience) comes to newly synchronize, and becomes a performative subject that participates in this investigation about this amazing (sculptural) matter that objectifies itself.

X seems like a vast and distant landscape, or a familiar subject with a certain symmetrical structure pulled right in front of one’s eyes. It helps out in the synchronization of the body which continues on in the difference of sight, classified as near-sighted and far-sighted due to the expanded skeletal structure that supports it, in the form of a coordinate system. Thus, having constructed a proper “situational space”, Lee allows for the scheming of new “suggestions” and “conspiracy” that is newly regulated endlessly in between the anonymous body and the material form. Here, the form constructed by the 3-dimensional coordinate system is close to being incomplete or very abstract. However, the sense of space with the minimum perspective as staged by the coordinates, and the sculptural completeness as a singular form created by the unified color tone and the discretely exposed sense of direction in verticality and horizontality, go beyond being abstract, to aiding the visual-perceptual effect in an imaginative dimension. As it’s always been, Lee exposes the vulnerability in the objective regulation on the form, and makes even the classification of different systems unstable. And by trying not to reproduce anything in exactitude, he makes an attempt to synchronize the sensory perception that can re-define certain similarities each time.

In that sense, X lies in continuation with Kiamkoysek and Gallus (2015), and when narrowed down to another tangent, it partially shares the scenario from The Objectuals (1999-2010) or the Face Trace (2012) series and demonstrates another trajectory in the continuation of his works. A year before producing X, Lee constructed the above mentioned situational space, set up the contrary difference in sight, and explored the synchronization of the body and the means to continuously redetermine the form through Kiamkoysek. In Kiamkoysek, he magnified the human skeletal frame, expanded the difference in sight, and created a sculptural form that borders abstraction. He then reconstituted its movement and form, allowing the numerous bodies (of the audience) to face such unfamiliar scene to (re)determine the visual perceptive imagination that traverses over the human body to the oddly formed rocks and stones on the mountains. In the case of X, the sense of materiality and abstraction of the form is emphasized more than ever, and makes one question the principles of its construction and method of expression. The formative sensibility that diverted to such direction brings together the body’s senses, demonstrating what outcomes were created by construction and expression through the effect of the powerfully-acquired frontality. And by doing so, this work asks what this abstract material form is, or what it can be, completely rearranging the subject’s awareness of the form.

Perhaps Lee already anticipated this new moment of adjustment. I have now recognized that the effect of frontality implied by X is the perception of the body as calculated by experience from the point that clearly suggests the symmetrical composition of the diagonal lines. There are also random forms that take on quite the concreteness from abstraction, and they remind one of Gallus, which magnifies the skeletal structure of a chicken to that of a dinosaur, and strange helmet in The Objectuals which freakishly magnifies the human eyeball. In that regard, X is advancing towards the presence of yet another certain (non-realistic) existence, like in his other works. I presume that, above all, it’s because of the 3-dimensional skeletal structure that mediates space and form. This means that only through active and effective cognition of the coordinate system, one has become able to easily traverse across the random(x) face magnified and brought to right in front of one’s eyes, and the unknown (x) abstract world that lies so far, out of the reach of the body. What’s worth noting is the exceptional perceptive abilities of the body which knows how to swiftly synchronize with the two heterogeneous worlds and smoothly fuse the difference in between such experiences. While this was entirely a job for Lee himself thus far, in X, it’s an empirical duty that’ s given equally to the anonymous “certain bodies”.

Therefore, Psyche up panorama gives one the optical illusion as if one’s own body is fully immersed in the coordinate system of X. Believing in this indefinite optical illusion would mean shrinking infinitely, entering someone’s(X) pierced eyeballs, and confronting an unknown(X) abstract world. Fine then, let’s have some more faith. I suddenly remember how the miniature human figure humorously suspended behind the instrument that mimics the horse face in the exhibition Through Small Windows (2014) reminded me of Lee himself. Like the miniature figures as small as my finger, I’m imagining as if I have entered the coordinate system of X, and am standing beyond someone’s eyeball. It’s that important to be aware of where one’s body is. Recognizing the size, weight and location of one’s body standing secretly in the depth of this inner space signifies the struggle to gauge the coordinates of one’s body in this massive world. Psyche up panorama, which takes its title from the climbing terminology ‘psyche up’ is perhaps in touch with such intentions of mine. Using this climbing term that means “psychological preparation for a difficult route” as the title of his work, Lee is laying out a scene that’s like the inside of something, or the trajectory of a planet in the distant universe, or (now that I look at it), an artificial climbing wall. This stirs up a very abstract atmosphere like in X. And this doesn’t seem like the end, because the body needs to quickly perceive what routes these abstract matters must take, and what forms they can take on.

Now then, let’s think about this again, after we take the body, which tried to quickly synchronize to the two spaces and perceive the special forms through abstract substances, to the starting point outside of the space. Whereabouts has Lee reached right about now? Lee has always taken the random form appropriate for entering a certain world and combining with his own body, imagining a nonrealistic existence from his body and actualizing it through his work. And by broadening this as an experience of an anonymous “certain body”, Lee is expanding the horizon of those that can witness it through someone’s individual experiences in a non-visible imaginative dimension, even if it doesn’t take the form of a real presence. Lee once took out a halved skull-shaped model, pointing each part one by one, comparing them to the abstract forms that constitute Psyche up panorama and showing how they’re similar. However, they have scattered to two spaces, and now they exist independently from each other with disparate coordinate values. Now it seems that his thinking about the body extends beyond the exploration of the presence of a new existence created through the complete “assembling” of certain things. Rather, it seems to rest in an abstract system where many perceive the new status of a series of material forms in a new space through their “disassembling”.
