Machines Transform Human and Animals, Sun-young Lee, 2010

Sun-young Lee

In his exhibition titled Eye Trace, Hyungkoo Lee introduces a series of peculiar machines that resemble neither humans nor animals, yet attempt to connect the two. One such example is the Orange Deer, with its beautiful antlers that might have exuded a wondrous totemic air; instead, the orange-colored, mineral surface on the front reveals a reflective, mechanical surface, glittering behind a transparent cover. Here, we seem to be told that prehistoric men have shed their bestiality and have made their leap toward divine ecstasy by dressing up as animals.

Today, in similar fashion, men try to shed their bestial instincts and reach a similar level of divinity through the help of machines. In Lee’s art pieces, machines connect humans and animals. The connection is confirmed by a classical period assumption, which postulates that humans, as well as animals, are to some extent machines. But animals are often more machine-like than men: Unlike humans, who are born in an imperfect state and require a long period of protection and education, animals can behave like machines-loaded with data and relying completely on instincts. Dominique Lestel in L’Animalit-compares the completeness of animals and the incompleteness of humans: In his view, the completeness of animals stands in opposition to the possibility of humans to become complete. The diversity of behaviors shown by men is the result of their incompleteness. But met have overcome this obstacle through language and through their ability to create tools and became masters of the universe. Animals and machines alike are different from humans in their “otherness.” Animals are machines that fell pain and often appear estranged. Hyungkoo Lee’s various devices capture some of the characteristics of animals and machines, renewing a past humanism-based identity and inventing a new one to replace it. The artist’s creations are more machines than animals or humans because they operate through the connection of distinct elements. According to the distinction made by Fēlix Guattari, the mechanical aspect of lee’s works leans closer to machinism than to mechanism, as the former presents more possibilities, while the latter is closed, alienated and only capable of a coded relationship.

Lee’s devices are machines and not mechanisms because they operate only by being connected to humans (incomplete beings). The new arrangement implied in the mechanical process performs the experiment of: becoming other.” It thus becomes a sort of a cyborg, a hybrid between a machine and a functioning organism. In this type of cyborg, a communicative network is woven between the human and the animal. Donna Haraway, who redefines humans as cyborgs, says that new indiniduals are no longer dominant of alienated subjects. They are plural, heterogeneous and connected beings behaving instead as humans, testifying like monsters to a different order of significance. Of all the organs, Hyungkoo Lee focuses on the eyes. Eyes often focus on food or mates, hence they are: “always full of desires.” Thus, Lee’s devices are also “desiring machines.”

According to Anti-Oedipus, where the term “desiring machines” finds its origin, an artist is the master of his created objects, and artwork immediately becomes a desiring machine. The devices are, simply put, desiring machines connected to parts of the artist’s body. According to Deleuze, desiring machines are clearly defined by their ability to be connected to infinite things, in all directions and respects. As crucial as the connective ability is the sudden change of direction. For instance, Fish Eye Gear or Mirror Canopy, as soon as they are linked to man, they mercilessly sway and disintegrate him. Un Creeper, man is even made to lie prostrate. In this piece, man is defined not by the unilateral measure of “cogito ergo sum,” but by the endless interaction with others (in this case, animals and machines).

Today, art is breaking away from anthropocentric values, the extent of which has become extremely confined (as is science), recreating species through decoded genetic information. Such changes seem to create chaos among conventional beliefs that still occupy a center stage, but such chaos among conventional beliefs that still occupy a center stage, but such chaos represents just another aspect of the freedom generated by the breaking of the mold. In Hyungkoo Lee’s work, man transforms himself into a circuit within a network in order to unite with a machine or animal. This does not represent a diminution of humanity, but rather a transformation for the sake of a different kind of progression. In fact, human history is the culmination of a process of continuous conversion of the center.
